Best New Baitcasting Reel of 2010: U.S. Reel Supercaster 1000 Pro

By Jay Cassell

This is no conventional levelwind reel. Instead of going through a moving eyelet, incoming line travels over a crossbar that rocks back and forth as you crank to evenly distribute the line across the spool. No eyelet means there is less friction on outgoing line, resulting in longer casts.

Cranking the handle turns the spool counterclockwise; incoming line is held low against the seesaw bar so it winds on properly. The unusual rotation is made possible by a unique gearing system that allows for a smaller gearbox, so the overall reel body has a smaller-than-normal profile. The reel weighs 8.2 ounces and holds 100 yards of 14-pound mono.
